The Mining University has a unique research and development base; it is in charge of some and participates in a variety of international and federal interindustrial scientific and technological programs in the field of geology, mining, metallurgy economics and ecology; has the highest level of training process computerization and research activities – over 2000 computers are incorporated in one system connected to the Internet.

The National Mineral Resources
University (Mining University) is the first higher technical educational
institution of Russia, founded by the decree of Empress Catherine II on November
1st 1773.
The Mining University has been playing the leadership
role in most important directions of management of mineral resources:
prospecting, exploration, development and processing of all types of minerals,
viz. solid, liquid and gaseous.
The Mining
University today is over 18 thousand students, over 150 000 square meters
of training and research facilities, a network of specialized laboratories
equipped with modern Russian and foreign devices.
The Mining University enjoys the highest state status of the educational
system of Russia being the most valued example of the cultural heritage of the
peoples of the Russian Federation.
The Mining University has been training bachelors, masters and
specialists (engineers) in more than 30 engineering specialties at 8 faculties
for Russia and 53 countries of Asia, Europe, Africa and America. Over 120
Doctors of Science and Professors, upward of 400 Candidates of Science and
Associate Professors, 30 academicians of Russian and International academies have
been working at 40 departments and branches of the University.
The intensive
research activities in the main directions of the national raw material base
development, efficient natural resources management, progressive energy
conservation techniques of extraction and processing of commercial minerals are
carried out at the university; the program of students, post-graduate students
and young researchers active involvement in research and inventive activities
is realized.

Only in the last 5 years the Mining
University obtained above 400 favourable decisions on foreign and the Russian
Federation patents for inventions; 3 scientific discoveries were recorded and
it got several state prizes of the Russian Federation.
The Mining University
hosts large-scale international forums on effective natural resources
management. The forum of young researchers is held annually where the students
from over 40 countries of the world present their know-how.
At present the Mining
Museum is a treasure house of the unique collections of minerals, ores, rocks,
paleontological rarities, collections of models and prototypes of mining and
metallurgical equipment, cold arms, and items of stone and metal artwork.
The National Mineral Resources
University (Mining University) has numerous scientific and business connections
with major Russian and foreign industrial enterprises – FosAgro, Gazprom,
Alrosa, Norilsk Nickel, Surgutneftegas, Novatek, Total, De Beers,
Carl Zeiss, Phoenix Geophysics.
In October 2009 our university gained a status “National Research
University” on the basis of the criteria adopted by the Russian Federation
government regulation No 550 dated July 13th 2009.
