LAUNCHING WORKSHOP: A European Roadmap for Climate Services Brussels, 17 March 2015

The event is organised by the DIRECTORATE-GENERAL FOR RESEARCH & INNOVATION and it is a follow-up of the Workshop "Towards a European market for Climate Services" (Brussels, 18 March 2014), designed to initiate a visionary and forward looking discussion on the development of a European market for climate services. One of its outcomes was the proposal to design a research and innovation Roadmap for climate services to be implemented through Horizon 2020 and beyond.

One year after, such a document has been developed and this second Workshop is the first public occasion to present the Roadmap to the stakeholders and key players in the field. It aims at bringing together the relevant communities, focusing and discussing the challenges and opportunities earmarked in the Roadmap, taking stocks of lesson learnt, and moving towards its implementation.

The Roadmap will be published by the end of February 2015, two weeks before the Workshop. It is not a European Commission document, but it is the result of the work of an ad hoc expert group, established by the European Commission, and relied on the involvement of a larger supporting group – including the EC services, Copernicus and the EIT Climate KIC - and on a focused stakeholders' consultation. The Roadmap is expected to offer a coherent and focused framework for action, able to leverage on existing initiatives at EU and national level, as well as to provide a support framework to local initiatives.

The event is a one-day workshop for about 180 participants, mostly leaders of organisations which either produce or supply climate information and intelligence, or are interested as actual or potential users of climate services. Some of them have been involved in different ways in the development of the Roadmap.

The Workshop programme is designed to introduce the Roadmap, share views and experiences on the key issues identified in the document, and initiate a discussion among scientists, policy makers, practitioners, climate services suppliers/purveyors and end-users, with the goal to facilitate a trans disciplinary dialogue, inspire innovative approaches and new forms of collaboration, upon which will ultimately depend the successful implementation of the Roadmap.

To this aim, we propose to address the key issues identified in the Roadmap through the contribution of guest speakers who will either present a case study (see 'case study' in the agenda), or their experience and perspective (see 'ambassador' in the agenda), based on direct practice and/or representing a sector/type of organisation/specific challenge.

We attribute to the term "climate services" a broad meaning, which covers the transformation of climate-related data – together with other relevant information - into customised products such as projections, forecasts, information, trends, economic analysis, assessments (including technology assessment), counselling on best practices, development and evaluation of solutions and any other service in relation to climate that may be of use for the society at large.

6th European University- Business Forum, 5-6 March 2015, Brussels

The 6th European University- Business Forum will take place in Brussels on the 5th and 6th of March 2015.

The Forum will bring together 300 high-level representatives from; higher education institutions; large companies; SME's, relevant European organisations and associations; as well as national, regional and local authorities from Europe and beyond. It will be a unique opportunity to share and discuss your experiences, compare examples of good practice, to network and to learn from each other.
Past Forums have demonstrated that better dialogue and closer cooperation between universities and business can make a substantial and positive contribution to Europe's efforts to make our education and training systems more effective and efficient, thereby supporting our economic and social development. The previous forums have been highly successful and led to very tangible results including the launch of the Knowledge Alliances under the new Erasmus+ programme and the creation of the HEInnovate self-assessment tool for entrepreneurial HEIs.

The Forum will start in the morning on the 5th of March and finish at 1pm on the 6th. The mornings of the 5th and 6th will feature plenary sessions, whilst the afternoon of the 5th will be organised into 4 parallel breakout sessions.

This year's Forum will address topics related to entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial university; change and impact; people and innovation as well as taking a closer look at some of the main current trends in University-Business Cooperation.

The National Mineral Resources University (Mining University) is the first higher technical educational institution of Russia, founded by the decree of Empress Catherine II on November 1st 1773.
The Mining University has been playing the leadership role in most important directions of management of mineral resources: prospecting, exploration, development and processing of all types of minerals, viz. solid, liquid and gaseous.
The Mining University today is over 18 thousand students, over 150 000 square meters of training and research facilities, a network of specialized laboratories equipped with modern Russian and foreign devices.

The Mining University enjoys the highest state status of the educational system of Russia being the most valued example of the cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation.
The Mining University has been training bachelors, masters and specialists (engineers) in more than 30 engineering specialties at 8 faculties for Russia and 53 countries of Asia, Europe, Africa and America. Over 120 Doctors of Science and Professors, upward of 400 Candidates of Science and Associate Professors, 30 academicians of Russian and International academies have been working at 40 departments and branches of the University.
The intensive research activities in the main directions of the national raw material base development, efficient natural resources management, progressive energy conservation techniques of extraction and processing of commercial minerals are carried out at the university; the program of students, post-graduate students and young researchers active involvement in research and inventive activities is realized.

The Mining University has a unique research and development base; it is in charge of some and participates in a variety of international and federal interindustrial scientific and technological programs in the field of geology, mining, metallurgy economics and ecology; has the highest level of training process computerization and research activities – over 2000 computers are incorporated in one system connected to the Internet.

Only in the last 5 years the Mining University obtained above 400 favourable decisions on foreign and the Russian Federation patents for inventions; 3 scientific discoveries were recorded and it got several state prizes of the Russian Federation.
The Mining University hosts large-scale international forums on effective natural resources management. The forum of young researchers is held annually where the students from over 40 countries of the world present their know-how.
At present the Mining Museum is a treasure house of the unique collections of minerals, ores, rocks, paleontological rarities, collections of models and prototypes of mining and metallurgical equipment, cold arms, and items of stone and metal artwork.

The National Mineral Resources University (Mining University) has numerous scientific and business connections with major Russian and foreign industrial enterprises – FosAgro, Gazprom, Alrosa, Norilsk Nickel, Surgutneftegas, Novatek, Total, De Beers, Carl Zeiss, Phoenix Geophysics.

In October 2009 our university gained a status “National Research University” on the basis of the criteria adopted by the Russian Federation government regulation No 550 dated July 13th 2009.
