Oil Shale Field Trip to the Uinta Basin
A 2-day field trip to the Uinta Basin will provide insights into the oil shale resource from geological and technological perspectives. We will visit key outcrop localities and oil shale test and production facilities. The field trip will leave from Salt Lake City, Utah on Wednesday, October 7th at 7:30 AM and will return to Salt Lake City on Thursday, October 8th in the late afternoon. The trip will include transportation, accommodations in a double-occupancy room, one breakfast, two lunches, and one dinner. Participation will be limited to 40. The itinerary may change depending upon accessibility and permission.
Day 1 Itinerary, October 7, 2015
- 7:30 AM – Leave Salt Lake City, departing from Hilton Downtown
- Willow Creek overlook, Seep Ridge Road :: Overview of the Green River Formation in the Uinta Basin, Utah
- Red Leaf Resources, Inc. :: Tour of Red Leaf's oil shale pilot plant and construction of the near commercial-scale Ecoshale retorting capsule
- U.S. Oil Sands, Inc. :: Tour of U.S. Oil Sands mining and extraction operation
- Travel to Vernal for dinner and overnight lodging; dinner at the Utah Field House of Natural History Museum, hosted by Uintah County
Day 2 Itinerary, October 8, 2015
- MCW Energy Group :: Tour of MCW's new oil sands operation on Asphalt Ridge
- Enefit American Oil :: Mahogany zone box cut
- Evacuation Creek outcrop :: The closing of ancient Lake Uinta
- Enefit American Oil :: White River oil shale mine, lunch provided by Enefit American Oil
- Return to Hilton Salt Lake City by 6:30 PM
The Field Trip can accommodate only a limited number of participants and generally fills quickly; therefore, early registration is recommended. If you register for the Field Trip and then cancel your registration, NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN.
